let me explain ....

This past winter I had the strangest transition
 from full time artist

to full time substitute high school art teacher.

This almost killed me :)

exhausted

creatively spent

and ZERO painting for months.

I didn't realize this would end up being a major creative incubator

In part, it was the abrupt shift from
controlled studio isolation

to the hum of hundreds of voices, rap music, and vending machines

and the constant steady stream of questions.

Yes,
questions about art ...

But ...
 unexpectedly...
questions about being from the South

That put these sandwich paintings into motion.

Southern traditions ...
especially food traditions.

The entire world has food traditions,
and while not strictly Southern
finger sandwiches are a big part of my memories growing up in the South ...

my mother's luncheons and bridge club,
church gatherings,
and tailgating

homemade egg salad

cucumber on white bread without the crusts

and of course, pimento cheese

needless to say, these food traditions give me the most delicious opportunity to do what I love with paint...

pile it on!

I'm thrilled to have Sold this triptych in

Color Color Color!

I'm organizing the supply list for my workshop
FYI
I don't use every color for every painting ...

just thought it might be fun/useful to see all the possible contenders

It will be a "suggested" list
approximate colors are fine

But color is a biggie for me.

"Down and Out" ... moving right along

Oh my gosh!!

how this...

magically turns into Barbie hair

is keeping me GLUED to the easel!

Seeing that the next canvas is three quarters hair...

obviously dinner and laundry and cleaning will just have to wait dear

BTW- if you haven't seen this movie ... you just must!

"Down and Out" ... progress report

I almost feel bad having so much fun painting poor Barbie while she's clearly so unhappy

braving a frozen smile ...

and those blank staring eyes ...

melancholy at best...

but I'm in heaven

with blobs of paint turning into plastic and hair

Yum-E...
so sorry Barbie

"Down and Out" ... in progress

(12" x 12")

This is the first section of a four canvas composition

each canvas will be 12" x 12"

next canvas sketched

Stay tuned to see how she develops and
I promise to be a bit tamer than my last Barbie painting :)

Ohhh and also....

("Stacked" - 12" x 12" overall painting size, framed in an extra wide floater frame)

I finally finished framing my previous multi-canvas painting "Stacked"
I just adore working in sections like this!
